        Birding sites       Hula Valley
The Hula Valley
The Hula valley is the one of the best bird watching sites in Israel if not the entire Western Paleartic. The Hula is located to the north of The Sea of Galilee and covers one of Israel’s most outstanding wetland areas. Up till the 1950 there was a large lake which in 50’s was dried out to use as agricultural land the project did not succeed and to try to repair the damage done by the project the site was proclaimed as a Lake and work began to restore the ecological damage to the wet lands and water ways in the area.
The Agamon (hula lake) is a separate site near to the Hula reserve was also made a very good birding site in the 1990’s. The two bodies of water and the land that lies between them attracts large amounts of birds up to 400 species have been observed in the area. In the Autumn and Spring the reserve and surrounding area are an important feeding and resting place for the migrating species. You can visit this site all year round. It is recommended to visit in the autumn and winter months when the reserve is bursting with wintering and migrating birds.
The key species according to season are:
All year round ; Marbled Duck, White-tailed Eagle , Clamorous Reed-Warbler
Autumn/winter Common Crane, Citrine Wagtail, Greater spooted Eagle,Imperial
Spring/summer: Collared Pratincole ,Purple Heron
The Hula valley is the most highly populated area for Jungle cats that thrive on the abundance of prey that live here.Otter and Nutria are more interesting animals also found in the Hula reserve.
